Want Sanaa Lathan selfies? There’s hope — get your best photos yet!
Around three hours ago, I received an email on the Oxford Dictionary Word of 2013: “selfie.” Instantly, I thought of reigning selfie queen Sanaa Lathan. The actress is a sexy social media beast with a magnificent mane thanks to celebrity hairstylists Larry Sims and Kim Kimble, respectively. She was instrumental in hyping up her fans for The Best Man Holiday, the long-awaited sequel to 1999’s The Best Man. To quote Margena A. Christian’s “Return of the Black Pack” in the November 2013 issue of Ebony:
For Holiday, Lee had to up the PR ante, but like a pro, he rose to the occasion, using social media to do some of the legwork. Early on, an unofficial “who-can-get-the-word-out-best” contest of sorts started up among the cast. “Sanaa won every week with Instagram. No one was even close,” confirms Lee. Lathan helped spread the word in late April with her exclusive photos taken on the Toronto set. Her pics drummed up so much excitement that The Huffington Post wrote a story about her exciting image feed.
With tips from Thicker Fuller Hair, here’s how to take Sanaa Lathan selfies:
Work Your Angles
It’s important to note that the angle is one of the first things that you should focus on. Holding your phone or camera directly in front of you is not flattering; avoid if possible. A 45-degree angle from above is the best and most flattering angle. This position will ensure a selfie that will garner many compliments.
Beauty note: To get Sanaa’s red lip, try Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Fiery.
Slay Your Hair
The key to a perfectly fabulous selfie is great hair. To highlight the hair itself, be sure that all the flawlessly styled locks you worked so hard on are in the frame! Hold your phone as far away from your body as needed to keep your hair the focus.
Beauty note: To get Sanaa’s fuchsia lip, try Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Fiore.
Learn Your Placements
It’s always better to look just above or below the lens. Be sure to tilt your chin up slightly. Play around with different head and eye placements. These tips ensure a selfie that best reflects you and highlights your beauty!
Beauty note: To get Sanaa’s rosy nude lip, try Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Perla.
Selfie Staple: Ty-Lite by Ty Hunter
Celebrity stylist Ty Hunter has an exciting, innovative product that will be hitting the market in January 2016. Hunter created the Ty-Lite, a protective, LED-lighted phone case that offers smartphone users three distinct lighting settings: Cool, Warm and Brilliant. Basically, it provides you with extra light so you too can take great selfies like Sanaa Lathan. If you have an iPhone 6/6S, iPhone 5S, iPhone 6 Plus or a Samsung Galaxy S6, go buy yours now!
Selfie Staple: Lumee Light Selfie Case by Pretty Much Beauty
Alternatively, if you’re such a beauty boss that you would rather use a more glamorous product, take a gander at Pretty Much Beauty’s Lumee Light Selfie Case. Created by celebrity makeup artist Jamaya Moore, the Lumee Light Selfie Case is a double-duty performing product. Not only does it function as a cell phone case, but it actually provides adequate lighting for on-the-go! You can do makeup application/touchups, spontaneous selfies, and impromptu Snapchat sessions. Available in black and rose gold (iPhone 6/6S only).
Selfie Staple: The Beauty Charger by Mai Couture
Mai Couture’s The Beauty Charger is for the woman who is obsessed with luxurious beauty products and tools. This LED Mirror/Power Bank duo is one of the most glamorous tech gadgets on the market. It features a standard mirror with 15 LED lights with 5x magnification (ideal for touchups and, of course, selfies). The power bank boasts 3000 mAh, which makes it suitable for charging your smart devices. Available in Glam White and Rose Gold, The Beauty Charger comes with a USB charge/sync cable and drawstring bag. I already have a Puku Light Charger in Rose Gold which is quite fabulous and sleek. However, I’m willing to sacrifice my preference for sleekness for The Beauty Charger — although I hope this charging compact receives a redesign soon.
