Uzo Aduba 2014 Critics Choice Awards Hair & Makeup

I recently rewatched the second season of Orange Is the New Black and let me tell you, the most pivotal character this season for me was hands down Suzanne. Not “Crazy Eyes,” but Suzanne, the highly intelligent but socially inept inmate played beautifully by Uzo Aduba. I try not to be too swayed by online commentary. Critics reduced Aduba’s character to “a modern-day pickaninny” due to her being constantly photographed with bulging, deranged eyes and haphazardly fashioned Bantu Knots. And you know what? I get that. However, the voting committee behind this year’s Critics Choice Awards obviously felt differently as Uzo won for Best Guest Performer in a Comedy Series (and here I thought she was a season regular). Here is the complete hair and beauty breakdown from celebrity hairstylist Jamika Wilson and celebrity makeup artist Jessica Smalls, respectively:
Uzo Aduba by Jamika Wilson: Motions
“We were going for a very royal, Grecian-goddess look. I wanted the hair to look like a crown to complement the gold vintage dress,” revealed Wilson. She worked her magic with a complete arsenal of Motions Hair products. Now Uzo has already proven that she can slay with a sleek, sexy bob but for the Critics Choice Awards, I think Wilson was correct in highlighting the regality of Uzo’s natural tresses.
- Start with clean, dry hair. For natural girls, use the Motions Natural Textures Moisturizing Cleanser
- Use Motions Nourish Leave-In Conditioner to detangle and add moisture to the hair and blow dry
- Work Motions Define My Curls Crème into the hair to smooth ends and create a deep side part
- Create a crown by twisting hair in an upward motion and secure with a hairpin. Set with Motions Light Hold Working Spritz
- Gently pull the twist to loosen the hair slightly and add Motions Shine Enhancing Pomade to smooth edges and finish with Motions Hold & Shine Spray

Smalls also chatted with People’s StyleWatch to explain how she decides what makeup look to give Uzo for her red carpet appearances. “The main thing I wanted was for Uzo to shine! It’s always a collaboration. I always need to know how Uzo feels when she’s in the outfit. Does she feel sexy? Flirty? Sophisticated? This all helps me use the makeup to bring the ‘look’ to life.”
About her inspiration for this particular look, Smalls said, “When I first saw the picture of Uzo’s dress, the first word that came to mind was regal. The beautiful gold fabric with that brilliant shine… I knew that the makeup had to be fit for a goddess or queen. I wanted to use rich hues of golds and purples –colors that scream royal!”
